Finally, the wait was over. The much-heralded iPhone was here.

July 1 (Bloomberg) -- Apple Inc.'s U.S. debut of the iPhone drew thousands of shoppers over the weekend, emptying most of AT&T Inc.'s inventory and causing network glitches as the flood of customers began activating the device.

While many who snapped up Apple Inc.'s iPhone were using the latest must-have gadget, some buyers were put on hold as they experienced frustrating delays in activating their cell phone service.

Stanley Sigman, CEO of AT&T Mobility, may be the envy of Apple fanboys for one reason alone: He's been testing out the iPhone for a month. He spoke with FORTUNE's Stephanie N.
