When Apple created the iPhone, the company threw conventional cell phone development practices out the window. Typically, cell phone carriers have powerful control over new phone features -- but reportedly not with the iPhone. Cingular agreed to step back and let Apple design its own product, using Apple software, and foregoing Cingular branding on the iPhone case.

The relationship Apple shares with Cingular/AT&T over the iPhone is designed to be win-win for both companies. I spoke with the guy who sold me the contract and he says that he's been literally swamped with questions and requests for iPhones, and that he knows he could sell 100 a day if he had them now. That got me thinking about how Cingular/AT&T will handle the iPhone and its customers
