Long before he took charge of the wireless network used to launch the widely anticipated iPhone, Richard Burns loved to tinker in the backyard of his family’s modest two-bedroom home just south of Churchill Downs. The youngest of four children, Burns created toy cars from bits of scrap lumber and built temporary boxing rings to spar with his friends.
